Originaire de Gaume,
au sud de la Belgique, Guilyan Pépin retranscrit de ces
paysages natals une fascination de l’enfance pour la
roche par différents médiums visuels.
À travers l’observation
nostalgique d’une nature en proie à l’espèce humaine,
l’artiste tente de réconcilier avec le minéral, tantôt
par l’art documentaire et la collection, tantôt par la
réalisation d’œuvres qui transcendent le concret et résonnent
en nous comme cohérentes.
Depuis 2018, et à travers ses différentes formations en arts à
la HELB et à l’ARBA-ESA, il s’attarde sur un sujet simple :
l’éternel retour de l’être humain vers le minéral. Ce motif
a donné lieu à plusieurs créations observant l’influence de
l’Homme sur la roche ou des installations et œuvres textiles
qui questionnent l’icône et le relief de la pierre, leur
évocation scientifique et mythique.
Pour Pépin, l’art est un moyen d’explorer ce lien entre l’être
humain et la nature, de sensibiliser à la fragilité du sous-sol
dans sa relation poétique, allégorique, et parfois inexplicable.
Autant que d’un point de vue général sur ce lien que d’un point
de vue personnel, les recherches de Guilyan Pépin sur ce que
l’image de la roche renvoi à chaque individu, varient dans
le médium. Photographies, installations, écrits et textiles,
autant de matière qui aide à infuser les pensées de l’artiste
chez le regardant, pour faire écho à un lien immuable et fugace.

Originally from Gaume,
in southern Belgium, Guilyan Pépin transcribes his childhood
fascination with rock, inspired by the landscapes of his
native region, through various visual media.
Through a nostalgic
observation of nature at the mercy of humankind, the artist
seeks to reconcile with the minerals, sometimes through
documentary art and collecting, sometimes through the creation
of works that transcend the concrete and resonate within
us as coherent.
Since 2018, and through his various art studies at HELB and
ARBA-ESA, he has focused on a simple topic: the eternal return
of humankind to the mineral. This idea has inspired several
works exploring humanity’s influence on rock, as well as
installations and textile pieces that question the iconography
and texture of stone, their scientific and mythical
connotations.
For Pépin, art is a way of exploring this link between humanity
and nature, of raising awareness of the fragility of the subsoil
in its poetic, allegorical, and sometimes inexplicable relationship.
As much from a general perspective on this connection as from
a personal one, Guilyan Pépin’s explorations of what the image
of rock evokes in each individual vary across different media.
Photographs, installations, writings and textiles—all these
materials help to instil the artist’s thoughts in the viewer,
echoing an unchanging yet fleeting bond.
